US National Security Strategy Recognises India as Key Strategic Partner: MEA

New Delhi: India has welcomed the release of the United States National Security Strategy 2025, which underscores the country’s critical role in Washington’s global security and strategic planning. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) highlighted that the document reflects India’s growing significance as a trusted partner in both regional and global initiatives.

MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal noted during a media briefing that the strategy reaffirms the United States’ view of India as a central partner, stressing the breadth of the Indo-US strategic relationship. He said the partnership encompasses economic, technological, and security dimensions, and is continuously evolving to meet global challenges.

The US strategy emphasises strengthened commercial ties with India, recognising the country’s expanding economic influence. It also highlights India’s pivotal role in ensuring stability in the Indo-Pacific region, particularly through active participation in the Quadrilateral Security Dialogue (QUAD) alongside Australia and Japan. The Indo-Pacific, accounting for nearly half of global GDP, is described as a major economic and strategic theatre, with the US seeking collaboration with allied economies to counter predatory practices in the region.

On security, Jaiswal referred to the 21st meeting of the India-US Joint Working Group on Counter-Terrorism held on 3 December, underscoring that counter-terrorism cooperation remains a key pillar of the bilateral strategic partnership. Both nations condemned recent terrorist attacks in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pahalgam and near Delhi’s Red Fort, while committing to coordinated action through international frameworks such as the UN, Quad, and Financial Action Task Force (FATF).

The briefing also highlighted the need to expand the UN 1267 sanctions list, including designations against ISIS, al-Qa’ida affiliates, Lashkar-e-Tayyiba (LeT), Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM), and related networks. India expressed appreciation for the US Department of State’s designation of The Resistance Front (TRF), a proxy of LeT, as a Foreign Terrorist Organisation and Specially Designated Global Terrorist entity, reflecting alignment in targeting terrorist threats in South Asia.

The National Security Strategy 2025 positions India as an indispensable partner for the US in shaping the geopolitical and security landscape of the Indo-Pacific. Both nations continue to deepen collaboration in economic, technological, and security sectors, demonstrating a shared commitment to regional stability and combating terrorism.
